The Clinton County Commissioners approved a road paving and improvement program put forth by Clinton County Highway Superintendent Kevin Myers Friday morning.
The Commissioners approved a total package of $2,100,062.10 which will take care of roads involved in the Community Crossings Grant, chip sealing program, cold mix paving and conversions. In addition, the Community Crossings Grant will take care of 9.5 miles of road at a total cost of $959,622.10. Myers added the county proposes to maintenance chip seal of 56 miles of road at a cost of just over $560,000, pave with cold mix over 12 miles at a cost of $714,600 and convert by a triple chip seal three miles at a cost of $75,840.
“It’s a pretty ambitious plan,” said Myers. “We plan on getting them done through the summer and fall.”
Myers said he does not have a start date on the Community Crossings projects. However, he did say they have to be done according to contract by June 29. So, he anticipates they will get started by the end of May.
Myers added chip sealing will begin around June 1 and everything else will come after that.
Besides the aforementioned costs, Myers said they will spend over $200,000 for stone to spread the gravel roads, $75,000 for calcium and about $25,000 to do patching of pot holes through the year. He added they will have to do quite a bit of wedging before chip sealing some of the roads.
The Commissioners also approved a recommendation by Myers to have Butler, Fairman and Seufert to take care of culvert inspections for 2018.
“We have over 400 culverts which haven’t been inspected in eight-and-a-half or nine years,” said Myers. “So, I am assuming we will having some new culverts coming pretty soon.”
Myers added they budgeted $80,000 for culvert inspection.
