The Clinton County Treasurer’s Office held the annual Commissioner’s Certificate Sale on April 10 at the Clinton County Courthouse. On the date of the sale 17 parcels were offered at a public auction. Parcels in a certificate sale have a county lien attached, and have been previously offered at a general tax sale. The State law requires that these parcels are sold at a much-reduced rate (less than taxes owed). The goal is to get these properties back on the tax rolls.
Since many of these parcels are not buildable, the value is often to adjacent property owners. The Treasurer’s office spends a significant amount of time contacting neighbors of these parcels to see if they are interested in purchasing. Seven of the 17 offered parcels (41%) sold, which is a very successful sale.
