County Council Approves Ordinance Modifying Property Tax Relief

The Clinton County Council approved an ordinance modifying property tax relief for Clinton County residents at a special meeting Friday morning at the Clinton County Courthouse.

“The council took action to modify a property tax relief credit that we have here in Clinton County,” said County Council President Alan Dunn. “It was done because of a change in state law that affectively eliminated one of the classes of property here in Clinton County that was previously eligible for relief but is now no longer eligible for relief.”

Dunn added they had to make some tweaks to their chart that designates how they give their income tax dollars that are then distributed as property tax credit dollars.

Dunn was asked how much of a difference this would make.

“There’s no change in the tax rate for the taxpayers in Clinton County,” said Dunn. “The tax rate is still one half of one percent. What we did is make a slight change in how we split is distributed amongst the property tax bills. The net affect is that the owners of commercial apartment facilities are no longer eligible by state law to receive that credit.”

Dunn added that the remaining portion was essentially split amongst the remaining taxpayers.
