Crash Takes Life of Darlington Man

Just before 10:45 p.m. Thursday, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office responded to a fatal crash on Nucor Road near Comfort Road. The Indiana State Police reconstructed the crash at the request of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

A preliminary investigation by Trooper Wiley revealed that a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling northbound on Nucor Road, approaching a railroad crossing. At that time, an Amtrak train was traveling eastbound, approaching the railroad crossing. The railroad crossing arms were down, and the crossing lights were flashing. The Tahoe went around the crossing arm and was struck on the driver’s side by the train.

Despite lifesaving efforts, the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash by the Montgomery County Coroner. The coroner identified the driver of the Tahoe to be Timothy Pettice, 33, from Darlington. The next of kin has been notified.

A helicopter transported the passenger of the Tahoe to an Indianapolis area hospital. The condition of the passenger is currently unknown.

None of the passengers on the train were injured.
