CSF’s ‘Grow Your Own’ Teacher Partnerships: Investing in Future Talent

Article by Madeline Richardson

CSF is tackling the teacher shortage by investing in future educators from within our own community here in Frankfort. Through partnerships with Indiana University Kokomo (IUK) and Indiana Wesleyan University (IWU), CSF is providing staff members and any aspiring teachers opportunities to earn their degrees while gaining hands-on classroom experience. These collaborations aim to develop and retain passionate, qualified educators who are committed to both Frankfort’s schools and students.

CSF’s partnership with IU Kokomo offers a Registered Apprenticeship Program that allows individuals to work in classified roles while completing an education degree. This hybrid model combines coursework with on-the-job training, ensuring staff gain essential teaching skills while earning a progressive wage. The program provides structured mentorship, financial support, and a clear path to state licensure. “By mentoring local talent, we will not only fill teaching positions but also foster a dedicated workforce likely to remain in our community,” said CSF Superintendent Matt Rhoda.

Through its partnership with Indiana Wesleyan, CSF is offering the Step-Up program to help paraprofessionals transition into full-time teaching roles. Participants work as long-term substitutes while earning their degrees, with tuition covered by the district. By removing financial barriers and providing flexible, accelerated programs, Step-Up helps advance careers while strengthening teacher retention within the district.

By taking the time to develop our homegrown talent, CSF ensures students learn from educators who are deeply connected to the community. These partnerships create clear pathways for future teachers while addressing the growing demand for qualified staff. As the need for educators continues to rise, initiatives like these help build a stronger, more sustainable workforce, bettering both our schools and the community.
