After launching the aluminum can recycling contest on Oct. 1, the Delphi Elementary School students, staff and families have exceeded expectations by nearly filling the recycling bin at the school.
Community members were encouraged to participate beginning Oct. 1 by dropping off their aluminum cans at Delphi Community Elementary at 300 W. Vine St. in Delphi to help the school win the Ball CAN-Do for Kids Recycling Contest.
The contest is administered by Recycling is Like Magic with the support of Ball Corporation and will continue through April 30 this year. The contest is intended to act as a fun recycling competition between local schools to help educate kids on the importance of recycling while earning extra funds for the school.
Along with raising funds for the school, the students are introduced to the children’s book “The Girl Who Recycled 1 Million Cans,” which is intended to help children learn about recycling, math, community, financial literacy, perseverance, sharing, teamwork and donating.
Last year, Recycling is Like Magic administered a can recycling contest across eight schools, which saw 1.3 million cans being recycled to raise over $21,000 for the participating schools.
The first place school receives $1,500, second place receives $1,000, third place receives $500 and the most valuable recycler, MVR, receives $1,000.
