The Delphi Opera House is hosting an Art Enrichment Program during its 2024 spring session with free classes for grades Kindergarten through senior year.
The programs will run every Tuesday after school from April 2 through May 14 from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. with an additional class on Saturday, May 4 from 9:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The classes are free of cost, and free transportation will be available for the Tuesday classes from Delphi and Carroll schools. The available classes will be Working with Ink for grades 6 through 12 and ages 12 through 18, Ukes for Youth for grades 4 through 8 and ages 10 through 14 and Introduction to Tap Dancing for grades Kindergarten through 12 and ages 5 to 18.
The Working with Ink class will teach up to 15 students how to create art with black ink and brushes with the help of the talented Daniel Bradford, a Delphi High School art teacher. All supplies will be provided for the class.
The Ukes for Youth class will teach up to 10 students the art of playing the ukelele. Musician Jason Wells will be teaching the course that covers the fundamental playing techniques and music theory basics of the ukelele, and each session will include practical playing, interactive activities and opportunities to be flex creativity with music education. The final class will have students be prepared to perform a song for the closing program. Ukeleles will be provided for the students.
The Introduction to Tap Dancing course will teach up to 25 students the basics of tap dancing, musicality and rhythm. Becky Floyd, CEO and dance instructor at Dance Dynamics of Lafayette, will bring her expertise to the course to teacher the American theatrical dance, which is distinguished by percussive footwork and rhythms. Tap shoes will be provided, and registrants must specify the needed size on the registration form.
On Saturday, May 4, the sessions will add another opportunity for the participants with the Instrument Petting Zoo, which up to 30 students and their parents may attend from grades Kindergarten through 12 and ages 5 to 18. Band directors Jay Dennison and Bryce Styles will bring a wide assortment of band instruments for the students to try, and Parker Denny of Don’s Guitars in Lafayette will bring a variety of guitars, including at least one electric guitar, a banjo and a mandolin for the students to explore.
