Donna M. Shumate

Donna Maxine (Long) Shumate, of Lebanon, Indiana passed away on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, peacefully surrounded by her family. She was 96 years old.
Donna was born in New Ross, Indiana on March 2, 1928, to the late James Otis Long and Valla (Conner) Long. She cherished Wyoming where she spent time as a child. Donna

would recount many wonderful memories growing up on the farm in Indiana. She was involved in 4-H and was a member of the DAR Good Citizen. She graduated from Advance High School in 1946 and attended Indiana Central Business College. Donna worked in advertising at Stewart Warner, as a secretary at Statewide Garage and then pursued her passion for medical care by obtaining her Qualified Medicine Aide (QMA) Certificate and retired from Parkwood Health Care where she worked for 25 years.

Donna was married to Ralph C. Shumate on June 26, 1953, and they remained happily devoted until his death in 2011. They had two daughters and enjoyed traveling together as a family.

Donna was a faithful Christian and attended First United Church of Christ and later was affiliated with One Way Christian Church. She loved old church hymns and sang beautifully. Donna was a Sunday school teacher, deaconess, and she participated in women’s fellowship where she enjoyed making artwork for church activities. Donna was active and loved to live life. She enjoyed berry picking and gardening. She was an avid reader and had a vivid imagination and could write the most interesting short stories and poems. She enjoyed game shows, old westerns, and spending time with her family and friends. Donna was quick witted and did crossword puzzles everyday. She also had a social media persona called “Facebook Mamaw” and she would put out riddles or puzzling thoughts for her followers.

Donna had three brothers, Wilbert, W.A. (Chub), and Darol Long as well as a beloved sister, Dorothy Chesterson-Johnson who all preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, Barb Hendry of Indianapolis and Karen Sullivan of Lebanon, three grandchildren, Brandy (Chris Luse) Hooton, Shawn Rodgers and Shayne Rodgers, five great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Funeral Services are planned for 1:00 p.m., on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at Myers Mortuary, 1502 North Lebanon Street in Lebanon, Indiana. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will follow services at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lebanon.

Memorials may be directed in her memory to the charity of the donor’s choice.
