“We did get an asbestos inspector here,” said Frankfort Redevelopment Commission Chairman Joe Palmer Monday night. “Before, we did not own the buildings, so we couldn’t get into them. It was just we couldn’t get the communications going to get him into the buildings to look. We had him here today. He pulled samples out of it. Not really suspecting anything but he still has to do the testing before we can proceed with the demolition.”
Asked when demolition might happen, Palmer replied, “There’s a good chance that it will be the first or middle of next week before we get started.”
The Board of Works recently accepted a bid of $89,000 from Ridenour Construction for the demolition and cleanup of the buildings and area on 50 to 54 West Washington Street in downtown Frankfort where two buildings were destroyed by a fire on Jan. 22.
The cause of the fire was ruled undetermined according to fire officials from the Frankfort Fire Department, Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office, the ATF and private insurance fire investigators. The fire destroyed two buildings and displayed five members of two families who were living in the upstairs apartments.
Mayor Chris McBarnes has said once the area is cleaned up and safe, Washington Street between Columbia and Main will be reopened. It has been closed since shortly after the fire due to safety concerns about the burned buildings.
In other action, the RDC is looking to the possibility of improving the intersections in downtown Frankfort for pedestrians.
“We are looking into it,” said Palmer. “There’s people that probably don’t totally understand about bump outs. But, they can protect pedestrians walking across the street. It beautifies the city a little bit more and hopefully we get some good designs here. We’re going to take a look and see if we can make it more attractive.”
The main questions come in the cost of a survey to figure out what is needed to be done in addition to not losing any parking spaces on the downtown square.
The RDC elected to table the matter until its next meeting on April 22.
