One of the traditions after a long dull winter is the long awaited “spring cleaning,” whether indoors or outside. At Canal Park in Delphi the fresh new season will be observed on Earth Day by cleaning up the park, its flower beds, gardens and trails.
“If you enjoy and appreciate using Canal and trail facilities that others in the public enjoy, hers is a call out to a Trail and Park cleanup day on Saturday, April 20, to help make them even better for broader enjoyment,” says Dan McCain, president of the Canal Association.
That Saturday beginning at 8 am is an opportunity for volunteers of all ages to come for Project W.E.E.D. — “Wabash & Erie Earth Day” beginning at Canal Park, 1030 North Washington Street in Delphi. If it rains, the alternate date is the following Saturday, April 27. In the past these Earth Day workdays have attracted 50-75 volunteers of all ages. Groups like Scouts, 4-H, church groups, and individuals of all ages are invited. Children should work together with parents or teachers. No pets, please.
All volunteers are asked to report to Canal Park 8-9 a.m. where instructions and team assembly will occur. From there, teams will be disbursed with a leader to work a specific site. Some locations may require driving to the sites then coming back at noon for lunch.
Volunteer “captains” will be onsite to supervise specific jobs, and a work list will be available. Some of the work will be in Canal Park but other work will be at nearby locations and trail areas. There will be grooming jobs, de-brushing and landscaping work to do. The big jobs will involve pruning, raking, bagging and chain saw work (by adults) to make sites more accessible to park visitors and trial hikers.
“Mark your tools with your name before you come that day; dress appropriately with long pants, work clothes, work shoes, gloves and other protective wear.” McCain advises. “An eager crew can accomplish much. Looking back at the end of a task generates pride, knowing how this is helping our community. It can be one of the best paybacks that volunteers can feel,” he said.
Volunteers get a free lunch served at noon in Canal Park prepared by the local Psi Iota Xi sorority. As in the past this meal is greatly appreciated by the workers.
