One Clinton County student has been named a recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the Clinton County Community Foundation 2020 Lilly Endowment Inc. Community Scholar.
Daniel Ehrmann, son of Brenda Buckingham Ehrmann and the late Andrew Ehrmann, will receive full tuition to an accredited public or private nonprofit Indiana university or college of his choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.
Daniel, a Frankfort High School student, is a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-M. He also competes in the Battle of the Books program and works as a student technician. Daniel is the sound manager for the Frankfort Theater. His volunteer activities include running the sound system for Red Barn Summer Theater performances, packing and delivering Thanksgiving dinners and Habitat for Humanity. Daniel also has helped with technology needs at the Community Schools of Frankfort during the summer in preparation for the upcoming school year.
He plans to study computer science at Indiana University.
The primary purposes of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship Program (LECSP) are 1) to help raise the level of educational attainment in Indiana; 2) to increase awareness of the beneficial roles Indiana community foundations can play in their communities; and 3) to encourage and support the efforts of current and past Lilly Endowment Community Scholars to engage with each other and with Indiana business, governmental, educational, nonprofit and civic leaders to improve the quality of life in Indiana generally and in local communities throughout the state.
Including the 23rd cohort, 4,769 full-tuition scholars have been awarded and over $405 million in scholarship tuition has been provided through the LECSP since the program’s inception in 1998.
The selection criteria identified by the Clinton County Community Foundation included academic achievement; school, community and work activities; essay; financial need; potential for success; and an interview. There were 26 Clinton County students who applied for the scholarship. A committee of volunteers evaluated the applications and selected four finalists who were interviewed by the Clinton County Community Foundation board and Scholarship Committee.
“The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship allows students to be able to focus on academics and not finances,” said Bob Thorley, Chairman of the Clinton County Community Foundation Services Committee. “It also encourages them to remain in Indiana and participate in the communities where they reside. The Endowment utilizes the Community Foundation to administer the program as a way to support Indiana’s community foundations.”
The finalists’ names were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana (ICI) for the selection of recipients. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 30 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state.
The Foundation recognized the achievements of the other three finalists with $1,000 renewable scholarships for a total of $4,000. They include Jessica Akard, Clinton Central High School; Karleigh Bessler, Frankfort High School; and Emily Longenecker, Rossville High School.
