Firework Mishap Injures Child In Carroll County

Carroll County first responders reported an incident involving a child who was injured by a firework that resulted in immediate airlift operations and road closures to provide the best assistance during the situation.

On July 4, the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office reportedly responded to a request for assistance alongside first responders for a young child who sustained a severe facial injury from a firework at the child’s residence just outside of Sleeth, Indiana in rural Delphi.

According to deputies, a call was received by Carroll County E911 Dispatchers just before 2:45 p.m. from one of the boys’ parents, and the dispatchers were informed that a firework had exploded into the face of the child.

Carroll County EMS, the Delphi Fire Department and the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, and a medical helicopter was dispatched enroute to fly the child out of Carroll County for expedited medical treatment, authorities report.

First responders were tasked with quickly constructing a landing zone near the intersection of County Road 975 and County Road 700 North where Fire and EMS personnel aided the helicopter medical personnel with transferring the child to their care as other first responders closed County Road 975 West to traffic, police say.

Law enforcement stated that investigations showed that the child was positioned away from the explosive as it was ignited, but the firework had enough charge to where shrapnel was able to reach him and cause injury. Responders reported that no one else was injured during the incident.

”Please stay safe and use caution when using fireworks,” wrote Deputy Steven Tkachuk.
