Four Vehicle Crash on Interstate 70 Claims Life

A multi-vehicle collision claimed a man’s life Tuesday evening. Around 5:47, emergency crews were called to the scene of a serious crash in the eastbound lanes of I-70 at the 92.6 mile marker. 911 callers were reporting one person was unconscious and citizen had began CPR. When first responders arrived CPR was still in progress, the victim was transported to Eskenazi Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. The deceased male is not an Indiana resident, his identity is being withheld until proper notification can be made to his family. A second driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Hancock Regional Hospital.

According to Trooper Christopher Cannon, the investigating officer, traffic was coming to a stop due to a construction zone east of the crash scene. A semi-tractor trailer failed to stop and rear-ended a van driven by the deceased male. That collision caused the van to hit the rear end of a Toyota pushing that Toyota into the back of another semi-tractor trailer. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this crash. The right lanes of I-70 were closed for nearly three hours while the crash was investigated and the wreckage was removed.

Investigators were able to determine the semi tractor-trailer was not exceeding the posted speed limit prior to the crash.

This investigation is ongoing and there is no further information to release at this time.
