Fourth of July Celebration Will Be Fireworks Only This Year

Residents in Frankfort and Clinton County are used to a full-day celebration on the Fourth of July in TPA Park. That won’t be the case come this Fourth of July.

The Board of Works on Wednesday approved basically a fireworks-only celebration on the Fourth. Tthere will be no vendors and no concerts in the park on that date.

“We’ll have to see where we are at that time,” said Mayor Judy Sheets. “We will have the fireworks but we probably won’t have the restrooms or the playground open for anybody.”

Sheets added the fireworks could be a smaller display this year.

“We want people to look at them from their cars, or if they are at the park, they must do the social distancing,” said Sheets.

The board also elected to table a decision about a proposal made by Jesse Cacy of the Frankfort Commons Golf Course on the use of carts. They also wanted to know how the carts were being sanitized between uses and to make sure that only was one person was using each cart at all times. At this time, two people in a cart are not allowed because of the coronavirus.

“The reason we tabled it was because we didn’t have the information soon enough before the meeting so that we could look over exactly what he was proposing,” said Sheets. “We will make a decision on Monday.”

Monday is when the next regularly scheduled Board of Works meeting will be. It is set for 5 p.m.

The board also rejected all the bids for the proposed Aquatic Center at TPA Park. The two bids were announced by the Frankfort City Council on February 26, but were both way over budget. The bids had to be denied in order for things to move on.

Sheets added it will probably be at least 90 days before any further action is taken on the Aquatic Center.

Sheets also announced that all events scheduled for Prairie Creek Park have been cancelled through June 30. She added the grand opening won’t be held until at least late spring or early fall.
