As a part of the Frankfort Police Department’s “2024 Year in Review,” the officers released 2024 data regarding drugs and overdoses in the city, stating that the department has seen an overall decrease in cases.
According to the department, the total number of drug violations were 215, decreasing 26% since 2023. The violations consisted of 148 possession or dealing incidents, decreasing by 21% since 2023, and 67 drug equipment cases, decreasing 36% since 2023.
The total number of overdose runs was recorded as 17, which marks a decrease of 32% compared to 2023. The overdose runs consisted of two fatalities, which remains the same as 2023, two accidental incidents, which remains the same, two suicide attempts, which remains the same, and three cases that resulted in charges, which is a decrease by 57%.
The department stated that while the department responded to two fatal overdoses, the department was encouraged by the reduction in calls. The eight remaining cases that were not detailed were calls where Narcan may have been used and the individual may or may not have been transported to emergency care, the department reported.
Frankfort Police Chief Scott Shoemaker released a statement regarding the statistics and how the officers overall approach drug-related incidents.
“Our main goal is not to arrest people who are suffering from addiction,” Shoemaker said. “Sometimes, the best place for someone who is at rock bottom is to be taken to jail. It may be the only place to keep them alive another day.”
Shoemaker thanked programs by Healthy Communities, One80 Recovery Resources, WeCare Recovery Home, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office Clinton County Community Corrections, Brianna’s Hope of Frankfort, Clinton County Probation and other organizations that aid those struggling with addiction by giving them a chance to embark on the journey to recovery.
