Frankfort Community Public Library Announces Poetry Writing Workshop

The Frankfort Community Public Library is excited to announce a poetry writing workshop featuring the president of the Poetry Society of Indiana, John Hinton, on Saturday, May 13, at 11:00 a.m. The event is in coordination with the FCPL’s inaugural literary journal, The Edge, which will feature the work of local teen writers and authors.

The free Poetry Workshop, led by John Hinton, is on Saturday, May 13 at The Edge, the Library’s Teen Department. Aspiring authors grades 6-12 are invited to attend. Attendees will discuss poetry, build a word bank, and learn about writing from a personal point of view. The hour and half-long program will culminate with students creating a poem of their own.  Registration is required to attend and students may sign up at myfcpl.org/calendar or by calling (765)654-87.

Clinton County native, John Hinton, serves as president of the Poetry Society of Indiana. The Indiana-based poet/writer is a 2022 Pushcart Prize Nominee. Hinton’s writing is inspired by our daily human interactions and the accompanying emotions. Love, hate, indifference, passion. His words explore who we are, how we behave. Sometimes eloquent, other times gritty, these words seek to reveal the joy and pain of living this beautiful human existence. Hinton has two published poetry collections, Blackbird Songs and Held, available on Amazon.

The poetry workshop kickstarts FCPL’s inaugural teen literary journal, The Edge. Clinton County students grades 6-12 are invited to submit original artwork and creative writing to be considered for publication. Selected materials will be compiled, published, and made available for purchase and check out in the new journal.  The poetry workshop is an excellent opportunity for young people to fine-tune their writing before sharing work with the journal committee. Attendance is not required to be considered for inclusion in the completed publication, but it is encouraged. Submit original work, by the deadline of May 31, 2023, via email at [email protected] or in hard copy at the Library’s Teen Desk.
