At 5:10 p.m. on Wednesday, Frankfort Fire Department responded to a field fire at County Road 150 S and 500 E. Upon arrival, firefighters began working to fight the fire and prevent it from reaching nearby woods or spreading through standing corn.
Frankfort firefighters were assisted by volunteer firefighters from Michigan, Johnson, and Kirklin Townships. Between all departments, ten pieces of equipment, including multiple grass trucks and tankers, were brought in to fight the fire.
According to Assistant Chief Ed Cripe, “The teamwork and diligent efforts of all firefighters, volunteer and dedicated alike, prevented this from becoming a much bigger fire and helped us bring the blaze under control quickly. We are extremely grateful for our strong partnerships with the Township Fire Departments and grateful for the local farmers who also assisted in subduing this fire.”
Windy conditions impacted the efforts of firefighters and increased the potential for the fire spread. Firefighters were able to keep the fire out of the woods, and only a small amount of standing corn was impacted. The fire burned approximately 50 acres of farmland.
By 6:15 p.m., the fire was extinguished. Firefighters remained on scene to monitor hot spots. No buildings were damaged, and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
