Residents of Frankfort have a new opportunity to improve their neighborhoods while sharing the cost. City officials announced this week that applications are now open for the 2026 season of the 50/50 Sidewalk Program, an initiative designed to help property owners repair or replace aging sidewalks.
The program allows homeowners to split the cost of sidewalk improvements with the city, making necessary upgrades more affordable. Under the arrangement, the city covers 50 percent of the total project cost, while the property owner is responsible for the remaining half.
Local leaders say the initiative not only helps residents save money but also enhances pedestrian safety and accessibility throughout the community. Cracked or uneven sidewalks can pose hazards, particularly for children, seniors, and individuals with mobility challenges.
Applications for the 2026 season are now being accepted, and interested residents are encouraged to apply early, as funding is typically limited and awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
The 50/50 Sidewalk Program remains part of Frankfort’s broader effort to invest in infrastructure while partnering with residents to share costs and responsibilities.
