Frankfort Parks Superintendent Tatum Resigns

Following reports of USDA violations filed in December 2024 and recent discoveries of deceased animals at the TPA Park Aviary and Petting Zoo, the City of Frankfort announced that it will seek to transition the department to a new superintendent.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21, the City of Frankfort announced that Frankfort Parks Department Superintendent Joel Tatum resigned and will no longer serve as the Parks Superintendent effective immediately.

Frankfort Police Department Chief Scott Shoemaker and Parks Supervisor Christie Martin will reportedly assume temporary oversight of responsibilities until an Interim Parks Superintendent is named. Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets commented about the assuming of the oversight by Shoemaker and Martin.

“I appreciate Chief Shoemaker for stepping up to help the Parks maintain operations over the next several days,” Sheets said. “I am confident in both Christie and Chief Shoemaker to continue the daily operations until the Board of Public Works and I discuss the future of the Frankfort Parks Department later this week.”

No further information has been released regarding a new Parks Superintendent as of 6 p.m. on Jan. 21.
