Frankfort Police Capture Accused Fugitive Monday

Matthew Luis Vega was captured by Frankfort Police Monday afternoon. Vega has been accused of child molestation, rape, incest, sexual misconduct with a minor and intimidation.

“It’s a big case and I think everybody had an intent in him being returned to the jail,” said Frankfort Police Chief Scott Shoemaker. “How he got out on bond, I can’t speak to that. I think that one of our priorities once the new warrant came down last week was to get him put in the jail.”

Shoemaker said they had two reports shortly after 3 p.m. Monday of sightings of Vega in the Kyger and Rossville Streets area. Shoemaker admitted he was surprised that Vega was still in the area.

“I think after a few days last week we assumed with a record like this and a warrant and the fact that everybody in the community was talking about it that he would have left town,” said Shoemaker. “We had looked at how far out do we go with this in working with other agencies. It’s surprising to me that he would have stayed close.”

Shoemaker said after another conversation with fellow officers and someone close to Vega, they decided to try find Vega. Shortly after 6 p.m., he was arrested without incident.

“It was a safe apprehension,” said Shoemaker. “Nobody was hurt and that’s always good when you’re looking at such a serious charge and the nationwide sentiment of police right now is not so high. I’m just happy that he went to jail without causing any levels of resistance towards the officer.”

Shoemaker added Vega was looking at 10 to 20 preliminary charges. Nothing had been released as of 2:30 p.m. Tuesday from the Clinton County Prosecutor’s Office.
