The Frankfort Police Department has announced its next upcoming Citizen’s Police Academy intended to create a growing population of responsible, well-informed citizens who want to learn more about the local department.
The academy spans nine weeks of coursework before a graduation is held for the participants. The classes are held on Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the department headquarters located at 1740 W. State Road 28 in Frankfort with classes beginning on Jan. 14.
Every evening will cover different aspects of the law enforcement profession and will be led by Officer Jacob Myers. Officer Myers has attended the National Citizen’s Police Academy Association conference where he previously held an appointed position on the board of directors. Department law enforcement personnel will present the instruction during the academy with an occasional outside speaker. Topics will include criminal code, vehicle code, OWI enforcement, criminal investigations, patrol operations, diversity, use of force, K9, firearms, virtual reality training, narcotics and more. Hands-on training will also be taught with simulated practical situations for the students to receive a first-hand experience of law enforcement in the local community. The program will allow for students to ask questions and receive answers on every topic of instruction.
A graduation dinner will be held upon completion of the program on March 18m and certificates of completion will be issued to those who have met the requirements. Students must attend eight of the nine weekly classes to successfully complete the program. Students will bear no costs for their participation in the academy.
The academy is designed for community members 18-years-old and above that live or work in Clinton county. Applications for the academy may be found at frankfort-in.gov. Applications are due on Dec. 6, and applicants will be contacted via email or phone by Officer Myers regarding their status.
