The Frankfort Police Department released further information regarding its camera registry program, stating that more than 50 cameras have been registered across the county to play a role in assisting with criminal investigations.
The camera registry program allows law enforcement agencies to incorporate a citizen engagement program and acquire additional case evidence in an attempt to solve crime faster by enabling citizens with the opportunity to share footage from their home and office cameras that may capture details related to a case.
“As the holiday season approaches and package deliveries increase, registering your security cameras can help deter potential thieves from targeting your porch,” Crime Scene Investigator Keshia Head said. “Additionally, if you fall victim to theft, these cameras could provide valuable evidence to help us identify and catch those responsible.”
The department stated that area residents and local businesses operating doorbell cameras and security cameras on their premises can register their cameras with the department, and camera registry is voluntary and does not provide live streaming video from the device. The department stated that the officers cannot view the registered camera and can only access the footage when uploaded by the registrant. The footage requested and provided would only be accessible to authorized law enforcement officers and only shared with authorized public safety agency members.
The department stated that the authorized officers will reach out to those registered for case assistance as they work an investigation, and the request may be made to a single resident or group of citizens directly or through media and social media outlets.
The department will contact the registrant through text and email with a secure link to use to upload footage. The footage is provided by the device owner on a voluntary basis. Registered cameras are not monitored by the police department.
