Frankfort Street Department Announces Operational Changes to Improve Safety and Efficiency

The City of Frankfort Street Department has announced several operational updates aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and accountability while ensuring city services and taxpayer-funded resources are used appropriately.

Controlled Property Access
Access to the Street Department property will now be controlled and monitored during operating hours. A gatehouse attendant will be on duty, and anyone using the facility must present valid City of Frankfort identification. Materials brought onto the property will be reviewed to ensure compliance with city policies. City officials say these measures are intended to protect employees, equipment, and public assets while improving daily operations.

County Trash and Recycling No Longer Accepted
The Street Department will no longer accept county trash or county recycling. County residents are directed to take trash to the Republic Services Clinton County Landfill, which is open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and closed on weekends. Recycling for county residents can be taken to the Mulberry recycling drop-off trailer at the Wastewater Treatment Plant on County Road 350 North or to the recycling drop-off located at the Clinton Central School parking lot.

City Recycling Still Available
Recycling drop-off remains available and encouraged for City of Frankfort residents only. Sorting of recyclables is no longer required; however, glass of any kind will no longer be accepted. Officials note these changes will help reduce contamination, control costs, and improve employee safety.

Trash Fees and Drop-Off Clarification
City officials emphasized that the Street Department has never operated as a free trash drop-off site. While limited staffing previously made it difficult to monitor all activity, the department now has the resources to enforce existing policies.

The weekly household trash and recycling user fee paid by City of Frankfort residents covers regular weekly household trash collection and curbside recycling service. The fee does not cover shed or garage cleanouts, remodeling or construction debris, furniture, bulk items, or large cleanouts. Fees will apply to these types of drop-offs, consistent with long-standing policy.

Expectations for Visitors
Residents using the facility are asked to follow posted instructions, arrive prepared, and be patient as the changes are implemented. City officials stated that abuse of employees, facilities, or policies will not be tolerated.

Wild Cat Solid Waste District Services
Officials also clarified that the Wild Cat Solid Waste District is located on the Street Department property and continues to accept specific items from both city and county residents. These items include paint, electronics, household chemicals, and hazardous materials. Residents are encouraged to contact Wild Cat Solid Waste District at 765-659-4257 before transporting chemicals for safety purposes. These services apply only to items accepted by Wild Cat Solid Waste District and do not include county trash or recycling.

City leaders say the changes are designed to protect taxpayer investments, improve safety, ensure fairness and accountability, and allow Street Department crews to remain focused on maintaining streets, infrastructure, and essential city services. Residents with questions are encouraged to contact the Frankfort Street Department during normal business hours.
