Frankfort Water Works Experiences Discoloration of Water in System

The following is a press release issued Wednesday morning by the City of Frankfort:

Frankfort Water Works experienced a discoloration of water in our distribution system on the evening of Feb. 14. While Frankfort Water employees and contractors were working on newly installed valves for our water pressure filters, iron sediment was stirred up inside the filter and released into our distribution system.

While this may cause taste, odor and color complaints, iron is a secondary contaminant per the National Secondary Water Regulations, which means contaminants are not considered to present a risk to human health. This issue may also arise when there is a large demand or water main break in the distribution system which would stir up any iron sediment in the water mains.

Frankfort Water Works asks that if you’re still experiencing a discoloration of water to run the cold-water faucet until discoloration stops. This should resolve the issue.

Indiana Department Environmental Management has been made aware of the issue and recommends no further action.
