A new way to explore local history and nature is taking root this year at Wabash & Erie Canal Park with the launch of an engaging community series: Nature Walks at the Canal Park.
Beginning this spring, the park will host monthly guided walks designed to highlight the rich blend of ecological beauty and historical significance found along its more than six miles of trails. From native plants and wildlife habitats to remnants of Indiana’s canal-era past, each walk offers participants a chance to see familiar surroundings through a more informed lens.
The walks are free and open to all ages and skill levels, making them an accessible outing for families, casual walkers, and nature enthusiasts alike. Routes are primarily flat and follow crushed stone paths, with distances ranging from under a mile to nearly two miles. Participants are welcome to walk as much or as little as they choose, creating a flexible and relaxed experience.
Each session will be led by the park’s knowledgeable and friendly volunteers, who bring both passion and insight to the experience. Their guidance helps connect visitors not only to the natural environment but also to the stories that shaped the historic Wabash and Erie Canal.
With its combination of education, accessibility, and outdoor enjoyment, the Nature Walks series offers a refreshing opportunity to slow down, learn something new, and connect with both nature and neighbors. Full details and the complete schedule can be found on the Canal Park’s website.
