Please join us at the Frankfort Community Public Library for our sixth exhibition of photographs from the James Ostler Slide Collection. This year we will be sharing pictures that were digitized during the first year of the Clinton County: Fun in the ʼ50s project. These images show Clinton County residents participating in community events and enjoying seasonal activities in the 1950s, such as sledding at the TPA Park, the Elks Easter egg hunt, and Sun & Soil festivals.
James Ostler, postman and amateur photographer, chronicled Clinton County life with his camera from the time he was hired by The Farmers Bank in 1951 to his death in 1979. After he took the pictures, they could be seen in a slideshow at the bank.
The exhibit will be open to the public September 4–October 26 during the normal operating hours of the library, which are Mondays–Thursdays, 9 a.m.–8 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Sundays 1–5 p.m. Admission is free. Forms will be available for the identification of friends and family pictured in the exhibit. Patron input during past exhibits has been invaluable.
The pictures in this exhibit were digitized with funds the library received in 2017 from a Library Services and Technology Act Digitization Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), administered by the Indiana State Library. More images digitized as a part of this grant can be seen on the James Ostler Collection web page on the library’s website and on Indiana Memory (www.in.gov/memories). Clinton County: Fun in the ‘50s is an ongoing project. During the 2018 grant cycle, the library will digitize slides James Ostler took at scouting events in the 1950s.
