George A. Kamstra

George A. Kamstra, 91, of Rossville, passed away peacefully on Sunday June 17, 2018 at the Milner Community Health Center. He was born August 22, 1926 in Lafayette, IN to Garrett and Mattie (Minniear) Kamstra. George was a 1944 graduate of Rossville High School, where he was a proud member of a very successful Rossville Hornet basketball team. Shortly after graduation, George enlisted in the U.S Navy where he served his country in Guam during WWII. On July 7, 1946 George married the love of his life, Phyllis Buck, who survives.

During his working career, George was owner of Texaco Filling Station in Rossville and then worked at Fairfield Manufacturing Company in Lafayette for 29 years until his retirement in 1988.

George was a leader with a servant’s heart and willingly gave his time and talents to many organizations. He was a member of Rossville Presbyterian Church where he served as Elder, Deacon, Trustee and Sunday School Superintendent; a 50 year member of Rossville Masonic Lodge; a longtime, dedicated member of the Rossville Lions Club; an elected official on the Rossville School Board for 8 years where he served as president of the board for a term; and was on the Milner’s Community Health Center Board of Directors for 6 years.

In addition to his work and service, he enjoyed golfing and was an avid basketball fan of Indiana University, the University of Cincinnati, and the Rossville Hornets.

George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, with a steadfast devotion to his family. Along with his wife Phyllis, George is survived by his children Linda (Ron) McMains of Rossville, John (Karla) Kamstra of Bloomington and Garrett (Betty) Kamstra of North Bend, OH; ten grandchildren, and twenty great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John, Garrett and Donald, and a sister, Ruth Mather.

Visitation will be 4-7 pm Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Genda Funeral Home Rossville Chapel and Thursday, June 21, 2018 from 12 pm until the time of the service at 1pm at Rossville Presbyterian Church. Pastor Mike Lyle will officiate. Burial will follow at Rossville Cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Clinton County Honor Guard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rossville School Foundation or the Rossville Presbyterian Church.
