Inside INdiana Business is reporting that citing an emergency with the state’s propane supply, Governor Eric Holcomb has signed an executive order which waives some of the time restrictions for truck drivers who haul the fuel.
“The current demand for propane exceeds the locally available supply of propane,” states the executive order.
Throughout the Midwest, there have been reports of propane shortages and long lines at terminals.
The governor’s office says some terminals have run out of the fuel.
Federal transportation laws limit the number of hours truck drivers can be behind the wheel. The governor’s office says some drivers are depleting their available hours while traveling long distances or waiting at terminals, “…making it difficult to deliver propane to residential customers within the statutorily prescribed time limitations,” according to the order.
The forecast for cold temperatures this week will mean additional demand for the fuel as Hoosiers crank up the heat on their homes and businesses.
Another draw on the supply is agriculture. Because the Indiana corn crop got planted late, it’s taking longer for the crop to dry naturally. Farmers need to dry the grain before placing it in storage.
With the emergency declaration, fuel haulers can exempt from the regulations restricting their hours of service. The order is in effect until December 2 unless it’s ended early or extended by the Governor.
