Inside INdiana Business is reporting that Grissom Air Reserve Base in Miami County is reporting significant growth. The base says the 434th Air Refueling Wing had a total economic impact of just over $134 million for fiscal year 2017, up from $122 million the previous year.
Grissom says it remains the largest employer in Miami County with a payroll of $66 million between military personnel and civilian pay. The base also expended more than $40 million in equipment, supplies, contracts and minor construction during the fiscal year, directly impacting local job creation by nearly $27 million.
“Anyone walking across the installation can see improvements made to the parking lots, lighting, computer systems and perimeter fencing,” said Martin Foye, financial services officer for the 434th Air Refueling Wing. “It’s clear to anyone working on or with the base that our operations tempo is the highest in over a decade and the Air Force is making sure we are equipped not just for today, but that we have the latest technological systems in place to carry us well into the future.”
Foye adds Grissom’s economic impact extends beyond Miami County because the base recruits and hires employees from throughout the state and nation. He says most relocate closer to Grissom, but some commute from several counties away.
“Grissom Reservists come from the far reaches of Indiana each month and venture out into the surrounding communities for meals, entertainment and shopping that bring a boost to Cass, Howard and Miami counties on drill weekends,” said Foye. “Those Reservists feel welcome in these communities and think of them as a second home.”
Foye says Grissom’s ability to manage and prioritize its funding makes it a highly-valuable asset for the local economy.
