Hamilton County Among Healthiest Communities in U.S.

Inside INdiana Business is reporting that U.S. News & World Report and the Aetna Foundation have released their list of healthiest communities in America, and one Indiana county just missed the top ten list.

Hamilton County comes in at No. 13, but that is down from No. 7 from last year’s ranking. Several other Hoosier counties are in the top 500.

This is the third year the publication and the foundation have collaborated on this health analysis. The rankings and analysis are based on an evaluation of nearly 3,000 communities nationwide across 84 health and health-related metrics in 10 categories.

The categories include population health, economy, education, housing, and food and nutrition, among others.

The publication said this year’s rankings are accompanied by new tools tracking COVID-19 data, such as number of cases, death rates and unemployment.

“During this unprecedented year, the Healthiest Communities initiative continues to highlight important components of community health while synthesizing the new COVID-19 metrics, providing an in-depth look at the impact of the disease on communities,” said Kim Castro, editor and chief content officer at U.S. News.

Other Indiana counties:

  • No. 154     Hendricks
  • No. 196     Boone
  • No. 246     Hancock
  • No. 279     Johnson
  • No. 397     Warrick
  • No. 466     Wells

The list also includes rankings in sub-categories. Hamilton County comes in at No. 4 nationally in educational achievement.
