The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating a report of an accidental “shots fired” call involving a Sheridan Police Department officer.
On Jan. 19 around 12:30 p.m., the Sheridan Police Department was dispatched to a shots fired call in Maple Run Subdivision, and the reserve officer on duty reportedly responded to the call and took the initial case information. Following completing the call and ensuring that no one was injured, the officer reportedly contacted his immediate supervisor.
According to the Sheridan Police Department, the officer had determined that the incident he was investigating involved himself and another individual approximately ten minutes prior to the call. The officer reportedly stated that he and the individual were test firing two non-department issued guns on a private range with a backstop complete with railroad ties and dirt backfill.
The department stated that preliminary investigation shows that during the test firing on the range, at least one bullet strayed by ricochet and struck a home in Sheridan Maple Run Subdivision approximately three-quarters of a mile away.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department was reportedly notified and asked to investigate the incident.
The police department stated that they have asked for the range to be closed until further notice.
The case is currently under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office. No further information has been released at this time, including the names of those involved.
