Clinton County EMS first responders honored with saving a child’s life after a vehicle and pedestrian collision in Clinton County visited the recovering youth for an emotional reconnection.
On April 8, Medic 1 and EMS 1 responded to a vehicle and pedestrian collision where the first responders found a young boy being held by his mother and being surrounded by his family after a vehicle collided with him.
Clinton County EMS reported that the severity of the child’s injuries were recognized quickly as life-threatening by the first responders on the scene, and the young boy, named Zavier, was promptly transported to Peyton manning Children’s Hospital at Ascension St. Vincent for specialized trauma care. While the ambulance traveled through the streets to reach the Pediatric Level 1 Trauma Center, multiple high-acuity, life-saving interventions were performed by the first responders.
Last Wednesday, the first responders on the scene who acted promptly to save Zavier’s life were given the privilege of participating in a review of the cast with Peyton Manning’s Pediatric Trauma team, which included the trauma surgeon who tended to Zavier’s injuries. Unbeknownst to the first responders, a surprise was awaiting them at the hospital–Zavier and his family.
The first responders were greeted by the family and were quickly enveloped in an emotional moment where the family, Zavier and the first responders were able to reunite.
“We rarely get the opportunity to reunite with patients and family, but when we do, it’s a moment that will define a career,” the department released. “It was truly special.”
The Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital Trauma Team presented the Clinton County EMS crew that responded to the call with Challenge Coins in recognition of their care and the role they played in helping Zavier survive and recover, including Paramedic Reid Cripe and EMT Megan Holliday.
“Our team is grateful for the opportunity to review the case and meet Zavier and his family,” the department released. “We continue to think of Zavier and wish him a speedy recovery. He is one tough kiddo. Zavier’s parents were also incredibly courageous throughout his journey.”
