A Terre Haute man was arrested following a pursuit from Lafayette through West Lafayette in a hearse.
On Friday, April 11, just after 10 p.m., an Indiana State Police trooper was patrolling the area of Sagamore Parkway near Kossuth Street when he observed a hearse displaying flashing red and white lights traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Sagamore Parkway, authorities report.
Before reaching South Street, the hearse reportedly crossed back into the northbound lanes. At the intersection of Sagamore Parkway and South Street, the hearse allegedly disregarded a red traffic light and continued northbound. The trooper reportedly attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle allegedly failed to stop and continued traveling north on Sagamore Parkway.
The pursuit reportedly continued from Lafayette into West Lafayette, where the driver allegedly turned onto Sachem Boulevard, and the hearse eventually came to a stop at the intersection of Sachem Boulevard and Sachem Court. Upon stopping, the driver reportedly initially ignored commands from troopers before being safely taken into custody.
The driver was identified as Herman Gray, 39, of Terre Haute, and he was transported to the Tippecanoe County Jail and faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, Level 6 Felony, resisting law enforcement, Class A Misdemeanor, and lend or permit use of a driver’s license, Class C Misdemeanor.
