Helen A. Payton, 85, of Mulberry, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at Mulberry Health in Mulberry. She was born in Lafayette, Indiana, on April 28, 1938, to C. Paul and Lucy Ellen (Carte) Sturgeon.
Helen was a longtime resident of Mulberry and graduated with the class of 1955 from Mulberry High School, where she enjoyed being a cheerleader. Following high school, Helen graduated in 1957 from beauty school in Lafayette. She had worked for P. R. Mallory and retired from Donaldson’s in Frankfort. She enjoyed gardening, reading, puzzles, cake decorating, and was a well-known seamstress making anything from wedding dresses to Halloween costumes. She dearly loved her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
Surviving Helen are her children, Jackie Tedder of Mulberry, Cris Payton of Lafayette, and Mike (Michelle) Payton of Eureka Springs, AR; grandchildren, Miranda Reed, Samuel Payton, and Rebecca Payton; and great grandchildren, Lucas Porter, Devin Reed, Addison Payton, and Amelia Luna Trujillo.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a newborn daughter and a sister, Bonnie (Fred) Smith.
There will be a private graveside service at the Fair Haven Cemetery in Mulberry. Memorial contributions in Helen’s honor may be made to Clinton County Humane Society PO Box 455 Frankfort, IN 46041.
