Herbert Peter Merten, 90, of Indianapolis, Ind., passed away January 20, 2026 at Rittenhouse Village at Northside Retirement Community in Indianapolis. He was born on January 16, 1936 in Niederlahnstein, Germany to Jakob and Barbara (Kline) Merten. He married Nancy J. Blystone on September 26, 1964 and she preceded him in death on November 29, 2017.
Herb graduated from high school in Germany and went to trade school there to become a master carpenter. He served in the United States Army from December 1959 to March 1962. His career was as a self-employed master carpenter for many years. Herb loved taking walks, gardening, and reading.
Surviving are his son Pete (Laurie) Merten of Carmel and sister: Maria (Art) Richmond of Boulder, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and sister: Elsbeth Warren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at Archer-Weston Funeral & Cremation Center, 501 East Clinton Street, Frankfort. Friends may visit from 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
