Discover Boone County, the Daughters of the Revolution James Hill Chapter, Boone County Extension Homemakers, and the Sugar Creek Historical Society are joining together to honor Boone County’s Revolutionary War patriots with a series of wreath-laying ceremonies. Twenty patriots, who are buried across various cemeteries in Boone County, will be individually recognized in these respectful events.
Doug Weisheit, Indiana State Festivals Association Coordinator, will serve as master of ceremonies of the event along with colonial fife & drum music provided by ISFA 1, the promotional vehicle of the Indiana State Festivals Association. The DAR will honor those patriots buried in the particular cemetery with a wreath-laying ceremony and other prepared remarks commemorating their service and sacrifice for our country.
These wreath-laying ceremonies are part of the broader America 250 initiative, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. As communities across the nation prepare to celebrate this historic milestone, Boone County’s events pay tribute to the local patriots whose sacrifices laid the foundation for the freedoms Americans enjoy today.
“These ceremonies are a meaningful way to honor Boone County’s patriots as we approach this monumental anniversary,” said a Leigh Ann Akard for Discover Boone County. “We invite the community to join us in recognizing these heroes and reflecting on the enduring values of freedom, justice, and democracy.”
The wreath-laying events will take place at noon at the cemetery of each honored patriot on the following dates in 2026: January 22, February 5, March 11, April 14, May 6, June 4, and June 24. Community members can visit the Discover Boone County website for more details about the specific cemetery locations.
Community members and media outlets are encouraged to attend and help spread the word about these important commemorations.
