Freshman Damian Lopez scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the second half to lift Frankfort to a 3-2 victory over Crawfordsville in the Class 2A boys’ soccer sectional title Saturday night in Lebanon.
The victory moved the Hot Dogs into the regional semifinal against Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter at noon Saturday in Greensburg. The first regional semifinal has Herron playing Lawrenceburg at 10 a.m. The two winners will play for the regional championship at 7 p.m. Saturday. This is the second straight sectional title for FHS.
The Hot Dogs took a 2-0 lead in the first half on a penalty kick by junior Brian Chavez and a goal seven minutes later by senior Manuel Garcia. Crawfordsville scored two minutes after that to make it 2-1 at halftime.
Following Lopez’s goal, Crawfordsville scored four minutes later to make it 3-2, but couldn’t find the back of the net the rest of the game.
Frankfort advanced to the championship match by defeating Southmont 2-0 in the opening round before taking down Lebanon 4-2 in the semifinals.
Cross Country
The Frankfort boys’ cross country team finished fourth to qualify for regionals a second straight year, while the girls’ cross country team qualified four individuals for the regionals, but fell one place shy of qualifying as a team Saturday at Harrison.
Leading the boys’ team was Hugo Hernandez, who finished eighth in a time of 17 minutes even. Cris Asensio-Mora was next for FHS as he finished 21st in 17:51. After that came Michael Corro (22nd in 17:52), Ventura Bautista (26th in 18:13), Kevin Espinoza (35th in 18:37), Bryan Longoria-Rocha (42nd in 19:09) and Brian Pratt (47th in 19:53).
The four girls who qualified were Carina Alanis (24th in 22:46), Christina Espidio (28th in 23:14), Ashton McIntosh (34th in 23:43) and Payton Debree (35th in 23:53). Other FHS results Kiyomi Perkins (41st in 24:19), Blazia Sallee (45th in 25:05) and Hailey Cook (55th in 27:00).
Girls’ Volleyball
Frankfort went 4-0 on Saturday to capture the Twin Lakes Invitational in Monticello. FHS defeated Western, Rochester, Twin Lakes and Rensselaer to win the title.
For the day, Riley Isgrigg had 97 assists and 13 kills, Avery Drew had 49 digs and 8 aces, Kimee Kingma had 29 kills, Emily Michael had 14 kills, Jenna Rockhold had 7 digs, Ashley Timmons led in kills with 33 and added 27 digs, Chloe Roberts had 18 kills and 22 digs.
Frankfort will take a 19-11 record into the sectional following a four-game victory over Southmont Monday night at Case Arena. Isgrigg had 37 assists and 5 kills, Kingma had 15 kills and 2 blocks, while Drew added 27 digs.
With the win, Frankfort finishes in a three-way tie for third in the Sagamore Conference.
