The Indiana State Police has announced that, at the request of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, it will investigate a police-involved shooting that resulted in the death of a Logansport man.
Preliminary investigations by ISP detectives reportedly revealed that early Christmas Eve morning, just before 12:30 a.m., deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in the 3000 block of West County Road 500 South on the border of Cass and Carroll counties regarding a report of two individuals who had been stabbed.
Reports state that upon arrival, deputies discovered one victim and began administering life-saving measures, and while retrieving additional medical supplies from the patrol vehicle, a deputy located a man later identified as Christopher Evans, 35, of Logansport armed with knives. The deputy reportedly issued several commands to Evans, but he allegedly failed to comply, leading to an altercation. Evans allegedly charged at the deputy, who retreated into an adjacent field, subsequently discharging their weapon and striking Evans at least once.
Despite life-saving efforts, Evans reportedly succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Notification to Evans’ family has been made.
One victim remains in critical but stable condition, and the other victim’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, authorities report.
No deputies were reportedly injured during the incident. The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave, which is a standard procedure for the Cass County Sheriff’s Office following an officer-involved shooting.
The ISP detectives are leading the investigation with the assistance from the Carroll County Coroner’s Office and the Carroll County Prosecutor’s Office.
