After more than 33 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Indiana, Indiana State Police Lieutenant Tom McKee is retiring following a distinguished career with the department.
Lieutenant McKee, a native of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, graduated from Penn Hills High School in 1984 before attending Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminology/Criminal Justice in 1988. During his time at Purdue, McKee joined the United States Marine Corps in 1985. A combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm, he served on active duty until 1993 and continued serving in the Marine Corps Reserves until retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2007.
In December 1993, McKee graduated from the 50th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy and was assigned to the Lafayette District. Throughout his career, he served in a variety of assignments and leadership roles while demonstrating a strong commitment to public safety and the Indiana State Police.
In 2001, McKee transferred to the Lafayette District Criminal Investigation Division, where he served as a detective. He was promoted to Sergeant to serve as Investigative Squad Leader in 2004 and promoted to First Sergeant to serve as District Investigative Commander in 2009. In 2014, McKee was promoted to Commander of the Indiana State Police Lafayette District, a position he held until his retirement. During his time as commander, McKee led the district with professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to the troopers, civilian employees, and communities he served.
During his Indiana State Police career, McKee served on the Tactical Intervention Platoon and SWAT. He was a Hostage Crisis Negotiator, a Defensive Tactics Instructor, and graduated from the 251st Session of the FBI National Academy in 2012.
Lieutenant McKee’s leadership, dedication, and commitment to excellence have left a lasting impact on the Indiana State Police and the Lafayette District. His legacy will be reflected in the countless troopers he mentored, the investigations he led, and the relationships he built throughout the communities he served.
Throughout his career, Lieutenant McKee was supported by his wife and family, whose encouragement, understanding, and sacrifices made his more than three decades of service to the Indiana State Police possible.
As he closes this chapter of his career, Lieutenant McKee looks forward to spending more time with his family and enjoying the opportunities that retirement brings. The Indiana State Police extends its sincere appreciation for his 33 years of dedicated service and wishes Tom and his family many years of health, happiness, and fulfillment in retirement.
