At approximately 10:07 a.m. on Wednesday May 9, the Howard County Sheriff Department responded to a two vehicle crash in the 4000 block East of US 35. Preliminary investigation shows that a 2008 Red Ford Focus, driven by 58 year old Donald L. Smith of Kokomo, was traveling westbound on US 35. Evidence shows that the Ford Focus crossed the center line and traveled West in the eastbound lane before colliding with a 2016 Peterbuilt tractor trailer, driven by 57 year old John E. Jones of Warren, MI. Smith and Jones were the only occupants in the vehicles. Jones suffered no injuries and was released from the scene. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Steve Seele.
Several witnesses stated that they observed the Red Focus cross the center line and into the path of the semi-tractor trailer. Assisting at the scene were the Greentown Fire Department, Community Howard Regional Hospital Ambulance, Howard County Emergency Management, Indiana State Police and the Howard County Coroner’s Office.
