Kokomo Police Investigating Leaving the Scene of Accident Resulting in Death of 10-Year-Old Child

At approximately 4:26 p.m. Thursday, Officers of the Kokomo Police Department responded to the 800 block of East Alto Road regarding a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle.  Upon arrival, Officers discovered a 10-year-old female that was struck by a vehicle while walking eastbound in the 800 block of East Alto Road.  Witnesses reported a silver or light colored sedan, traveling westbound, struck the female and fled from the scene. The 10-year-old victim was transported to a local hospital and later airlifted to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.

Officers located the suspected driver and the suspected striking vehicle in the 2000 block of East Alto Road. The suspected driver was identified as 22-year-old Josh Cochran of Kokomo. Cochran was arrested for Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death, a Class 5 Felony, after learning the 10-year-old succumbed to her injuries.

On Friday, an autopsy was performed on the 10-year-old victim by the Marion County Coroner’s office.  The preliminary cause of death is blunt force trauma.  The victim has been identified as Renay Jenkins of Kokomo. The case is currently being investigated by the Marion County Coroner’s Office and the Kokomo Police Department crash investigators.  Anyone having further information regarding this case is asked to contact Sgt.
