Lebanon High School Junior Explores Her Future Career At IU Health

A Lebanon High School Junior experienced the fast-paced environment of the operating room during a four-day job shadowing experience at IU Health Arnett.

Lebanon Junior Audrey Butler experienced the intricacies of the operating room and the emergency department through a four-day job shadowing experience with IU Health Arnett, where she was reportedly granted the opportunity to contrast the reality of the operations with the perceptions of melodramatic procedures witnesses in television dramas. According to IU Heath, Butler was able to experience the calmness of the operating room despite the severity of the operations that occur.

Butler was granted the opportunity through IU Health as a result of her aspirations to continue her career toward her future dream job as an emergency medicine nurse practitioner.

“I feel like it’s what I’m supposed to do in life, what I’m called to do,” Butler said. “I would like to be there in peoples’ most desperate moments and help make their experience better.”

Butler’s job shadowing opportunity granted her the experience of two days within the operating room and two days within the emergency department where she witnessed intricate procedures, such as gallbladder removals, hernia repairs and a mastectomy. Butler reported that the fast-paced nature of the emergency department that solidified her dream of continuing her career as an emergency medicine nurse practitioner in the future.
