Indiana State Police

Detectives from the Indiana State Capitol Police, along with the Indiana State Police, are investigating an alleged homicide and attempted murder that occurred in downtown Indianapolis.

June 23, 2026 the Indiana State Capitol Police was contacted by the Marion County Coroner’s Office about an incident that occurred on North Senate Avenue June 19, 2026. According to the Coroner’s Office, an adult male was transported by ambulance from that location on June 19, 2026 for what was believed to be a medical issue. Upon examination by medical professionals in the following days, they believe the victim had sustained injuries consistent with a physical battery. The victim was in critical condition. After being contacted on June 23, 2026, detectives immediately began an investigation, which included reviewing all available video surveillance. Investigators determined a physical attack occurred June 19, 2026 at 1:58 a.m on N. Senate Avenue. At this point in the investigation, it does not appear any weapons were used.

The victim of the June 19, 2026 battery succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased Sunday June 28, 2026.

While investigators were working to identify the suspect, Capitol Police were dispatched to second alleged attack which occurred June 26, 2026 at 2:12 a.m. in the same location. After investigators reviewed the video footage from the second attack they believed the suspect was the same person from the June 19 attack. Again, it does not appear weapons were involved, but the video does show a physical battery. The victim from this battery was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Investigators shared images of the suspect with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. An officer from IMPD located the suspect on June 26 on New Jersey Street in Indianapolis. The man was taken into custody and transported to the Indiana State Police Post in Indianapolis to speak with detectives.

Based upon probable cause of two counts of attempted murder, 29 year old Michael Willis was arrested for his alleged role in the incidents. He was transported to the Marion County Jail Friday evening, June 26, 2026. Due to the passing of the first victim after the arrest was made, amended charges will be reviewed by the Marion County Prosecutors’ Office.

This arrest is based upon probable cause of a crime, all suspects are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court. Since an arrest has been made, any further inquiries into this case should be referred to the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
