The Indiana State Police released further information regarding a police pursuit that spanned several counties, ending with a crash in Indianapolis that proved fatal earlier this week.
On April 14, at approximately 9:15 p.m., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office reportedly attempted to pull over a maroon Dodge Durango on State Road 3 near Indiana Avenue in New Castle, which allegedly prompted the driver, identified as Kirk Gibson, 38, to speed away from the pursuing officers.
According to authorities, the chase entered I-70 westbound and continued through Hancock County and into Marion County. The Durango reportedly exited I-70 at Post Road northbound, coming back south to the intersection of Washington Street and Mitthoefer Road. The Durango was reportedly southbound on Mitthoefer and entered the intersection at a high speed, striking a blue Ford Mustang and a white BMW.
According to police, the Durango flipped multiple times, coming to a rest upside down south of the intersection. An adult male was reportedly ejected from the Durango and was later pronounced deceased at the scene. Three other occupants of the Durango were transported to area hospitals, the driver of the Mustang was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries and the driver of the BMW suffered minor injuries and was treated before release, authorities report.
Officers stated that several firearms were located at the scene, and they were believed to have fallen out of the Durango during the crash.
On April 17, the department released further information, stating that the deceased occupant of the Durango was Dewaun Hampton, 33, who sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
Investigators allegedly confirmed today, April 17, that Gibson was the driver of the Durango that fled from Henry County Deputies and the Indiana State Police. Investigators determined that the Durango was allegedly stolen, and Gibson now faces preliminary charges of resisting law enforcement, resisting law enforcement causing death and resisting law enforcement causing serious bodily injury and auto theft.
The circumstances of the incident are still under investigation.
