Memorial Day Program Held at Prairie Creek

People gathered on the bridge crossing the creek at Prairie Creek Park to honor sailors and marines buried at sea during the annual Memorial Day Program Monday.

The annual Memorial Day Program celebrated its move to Prairie Creek Park Monday with an absolutely splendid day to honor all of those people who had given the ultimate sacrifice so we can have the freedoms that we enjoy.

Frankfort Mayor Judy Sheets gave the Memorial Address.

“I was honored for them to ask me,” said Sheets. “I think it’s very important for our community to remember what Memorial Day is about. It’s for those men and women who fought for our country and gave the ultimate sacrifice. I think it’s very important for us to remember the sacrifice for all of us.”

In the past, the program has been held at Veterans Park, which is just one block away from the new site.

Another change coming next year is that the City of Frankfort will take over the ceremonies with the help of the veterans.

“We are going to take that over,” said Sheets. “But, we told them only with their assistance because we know how successful it’s been in the past and we want to continue that.”

The ceremony honoring sailors and marines buried at sea was held on the bridge at the park.
