Memorial Sundial Occupies Prime And Somber Spot During Hot Dog Festival

The Frankfort Hot Dog Festival will have hundreds of delightful “glittering objects.”  Spectacular sights and sounds with family fun opportunities will be everywhere around the square.

That is a wonderful thing.

The Veteran’s memorial on the South side of the Clinton County Court House will occupy a prime spot at the Festival.  Its very presence will remind us that many who came before us sacrificed and made it possible for us to enjoy the sunny festival weekend.

The sundial theme is “They gave their sunny days so we may enjoy ours in freedom” and is accurate to within 5 minutes if used properly.

Here is how to use the memorial sundial.  Check it out at the festival and see if you can tell the time without looking at a clock or watch or cell phone.

Place the balls of your feet on “todays date”.  Since the festival is on July 26th and 27th, the balls of your feet will be between July and August marked on the Calendar pad.  The 26th and 27th are very close to August so you will place your feet just above August.

Tammy Sheridan demonstrates how to use the memorial sundial on the south side of the Clinton County Court House. The sundial is accurate within 5 minutes because of its customized design.

Now hold your hands directly up over your head. Look at the shadow. The right number is used when we have Daylight Saving Time.  Your shadow should point to within 5 minutes of the actual time if you are standing on the proper date and have your hands directly overhead.

Stand with the balls of your feet on the today’s date. If the date is August 15, you must stand with the balls of your feet halfway between “August” and “September” etc.

The sundial is so accurate because it was customized for the exact longitude and latitude it occupies.

The Sundial was designed by the trustees of the Prairie Grass Observatory in co-operation with Joe Root.
