Mulberry Announces Hydrant Flushing Scheduled For May 6 Through May 10

The Town of Mulberry has announced that the Mulberry Water Department will begin its annual hydrant flushing program beginning May 6 through May 10 with flushing hours being scheduled from 7 p.m. to midnight during the timeframe.

During the hydrant flushing program, residents may experience some discoloration as well as low water pressure for the five-hour period during the week.

“Flushing hydrants is an important preventive maintenance activity that verifies proper operation of the hydrant and ensures adequate water flow,” the town released. “Flushing also removed sediment that naturally accumulates in the water lines. Removing these materials through flushing maintains properly working systems.”

When the hydrant flushing begins, residents in the area may notice slightly yellow, orange or brown-colored water coming from their faucets inside their residence. For those affected, the town encourages residents to run cold water from the tap for a few minutes before utilizing the water. If the water remains discolored, the town encourages residents to wait around 30 minutes and run the water again to resolve the issue of discoloration.

The town stated that the temporary discoloration only affects the appearance of the water and does not cause a health or safety risk for those who consume the water, but residents should avoid utilizing the water for washing as the discoloration may stain clothes.

“While the water is safe, you should avoid washing laundry during scheduled flushing times, as the flushed sediment could discolor white clothing,” the town released. “Wait until the water runs clear at the tap, then wash a load of dark clothes first. You should also avoid using hot water until the cold water runs clear.”

Residents that may experience discoloration for a prolonged period of time or experience a significant loss of water pressure after the hydrant flushing has occurred have been instructed to contact the Water Department at 765-296-2455 and enter Extension 3 for help in resolving the issue.
