Patrol Conducted By Troopers Leads To Drug Arrest & Impairment Charges On I-74

A traffic stop led to the arrest of a 36-year-old Muncie man who possessed suspected fentanyl, marijuana and drug paraphernalia on March 22.

On March 22, just after 1 a.m., an Indiana State Police trooper was patrolling Interstate 74 near the 10-mile marker when a traffic stop was conducted on a 2015 Mercedes C350 for speeding, and the driver was later identified as Jerrell James, 36, of Muncie.

While speaking with James, the trooper allegedly noticed signs of potential criminal activity, and after receiving consent to search the vehicle, the trooper reportedly located suspected fentanyl, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Further investigation reportedly revealed signs of impairment, leading the trooper to develop probable cause that James was under the influence of a controlled substance, leading to his arrest and transportation to the Fountain County Jail.

The suspect allegedly possessed suspected fentanyl that had a preliminary weight of just over 25 grams, and the substance will be sent to the Indiana State Police Laboratory for further testing to confirm the substance and exact weight.

At the time of the stop, two minors were in the vehicle. They were released to family a member.

  • Possession of a Narcotic Drug – Level 4 Felony
  • Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated with a Passenger Under 18 Years of Age – Level 6 Felony
