There have been several issues with Prairie Creek Park moving forward from finding unexpected items buried underground to the constant deluge of rain from Mother Nature this spring.

However, a good piece of news happened Wednesday as the pedestrian bridge was lowered into place over Prairie Creek thus giving the new park a substantial boost.

“I’m excited,” said Frankfort Redevelopment Commission Chairman Joe Palmer. “I’ve been waiting awhile for this. This was suppose to have been done roughly two months ago. But, because of the weather and everything going on, it’s been delayed. It’s now setting in place.”

The 27-ton bridge was lifted by a 300-ton crane by MacDougall Pierce from Fishers, who are the contractors for this project.

One thing the delay has done is simplify the scheduling for the Hot Dog Festival, which comes up July 26 and 27 in downtown Frankfort.

“We’re having two stages,” said Palmer. “The big stage for the headliners will be down here on Washington Street east of the bridge right here and most of the concert will be open up the street there from Jackson Street all the way back down. The headliners are Kyle Cook and the Wolves on Friday night (July 26) and the Kentucky Headhunters on Saturday (July 27) night.”

The biggest question mark remaining is will the park be ready in time for a pair of anticipated events in October.

“We’ve got two major events scheduled in October down here,” said Palmer. “We’re working with the main contractor on that. We’re going to be close, but they are planning on us having it ready for those two events, which is a Hispanic Festival down here and we’re also having the Oktoberfest down here.”

At this time, the Hispanic Festival is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 5, and Oktoberfest is set for the following weekend on Saturday, October 12.
