Peru Man Arrested on Multiple Charges After Ramming Police Car

A hit and run crash has resulted in the arrest of Charles D. Summers, 26, Peru. Summers was taken into custody by Indiana State Police Detective Josh Maller and Indiana State Police Sergeant T.J. Zeiser. Summers was incarcerated in the Miami County Jail to face criminal charges for driving while suspended, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a property damage crash, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, possession of a hypodermic needle, possession of methamphetamine, possession of heroin, criminal recklessness with a vehicle, and possession of paraphernalia.

At approximately 8:31 a.m. Friday, the Miami County Central Dispatch reported a hit and run crash near Business 31 and Wallick Road. Allegedly a silver Honda struck a Peru Utilities’ vehicle and fled the scene. The Honda also allegedly hit a fence on Miami County Road 250 South and fled that scene. Indiana State Police Detective Josh Maller located the Honda in the parking lot of Maconaquah Park, at One Park Ave. Maller activated the emergency lighting on his police car. The driver of the Honda, later identified as Summers, drove away. Sergeant T.J. Zeiser arrived at the park to assist. Summers drove around Zeiser’s police car into a grassy area.

The Honda eventually hit a large rock near the entrance of the park. Detective Maller placed his police car behind the Honda to block an escape. Summers put the Honda in reverse, and allegedly rammed Detective’s Maller’s police car. Zeiser and Maller took Summers into custody at gunpoint.

During Summers’ arrest, officers allegedly found a used syringe, methamphetamine, heroin, and drug paraphernalia. Further investigation revealed that Summers was allegedly intoxicated on a narcotic while driving. It was also revealed that Summers had a suspended operator’s license.

No officers were injured in the incident.
